The Kingdom of Belgium is a small, highly developed and urbanized country in Western Europe bordering the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg, France and the North Sea. The country is known for its beer, chocolate and castles, and features Dutch, French and German as official languages. The country has earned the nickname "The Battlefield of Europe" for being a battleground for historic conflicts between great powers, including the Battle of Waterloo in the 19th century and two world wars in the 20th century. Belgium is one of the six countries that founded the European Union, and a founding member of the eurozone, the World Trade Organization, NATO and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. It hosts NATO, the Council of Europe and many other international organizations.
Belgium is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of government. The land is divided into three autonomous regions: Flanders, the more economically developed Dutch-speaking northern community comprising the majority of the population, Wallonia, the French-speaking southern province, and the Brussels Capital Territory in the center.
According to the 2021 Best Country report, Belgium is seen as concerned with the environment and human rights, ranking 13th and 11th, respectively, in the category.
Belgium is considered a high-income country, and reports a relatively high quality of life for its citizens, as well as high levels of health care. This is seen as the provision of relatively quality education.
The country's football achievements are also very good and are experiencing a fairly rapid increase until now they are ranked first in the world (Belgium Fifa Rank). Manager Roberto Martinez selected a star-studded collection of players from some of Europe's biggest teams. Picking a full squad with over 1,000 caps between them, Martinez wants to take advantage of the experience that current Belgian talent has. The player with the most caps in a squad of 76 games, Kevin De Bruyne took on the role of captain in Hazard's absence as Belgium beat Wales and Belarus, in the draw with the Czech Republic.
With many key players in their late 20s or early 30s, this year's Euros and next year's World Cup are seen as the last chance for a very talented generation to get some trophies.
